Some meals should never be ordered or disrespected as a takeway or as takeouts…. like steak or BBQ ribs. Or for that matter Micky D’s or the Colonel. Yet other meals are okay… in fact they are ideal as takeouts or takeaways. The big four of Thai, Chinese, Indian, Pizza all travel well. And can present ok for a dining encore the next day. Pasta? For the love of grods what were you thinking! What do you think travels well and what should never be considered? Sushi? (Darren Saturday | 9 Comments)

In terms of takeout food, I’ve always wondered why pizza is about the only style of takeout in Australia that you can expect to be home-delivered. Is it because the pizza in Australia is so bad that they pretty much have to bring it to your house and shovel it into your mouth before you’ll even think about eating it? Or does the Mafia have some kind of secret stranglehold over home delivery in Australia? Wouldn’t you think the Triads would have something to say about that, where you order pizza but you hear a scuffle outside your house and you end up eating Chinese again and wondering why all your pizza delivery guys are suddenly so inscrutable? Also, shouldn’t there be whole neighborhoods where you could only get stroganoffs delivered, where the Russians give you a free Kalishnakov with every 5th delivery and then they hide in the bushes in the front yard, waiting for the Chinese to arrive, only to discover that they were already hiding in the bushes, waiting for the pizza guys?

Pizza delivery people are secret government agents that photograph you as they deliver your pizza.
Don’t answer the door, just leave the money on the verandah or porch and speak to them through the keyhole. Trust me it works…..

So… what, you’re telling me that the government has heaps of photos of me saying, “Wait, this isn’t what I ordered. And what the hell do you call this? Listen, for it to technically be garlic bread, it has to be made of bread, and it should have been exposed to garlic at some point before you pulled into my driveway and ran over that Chinese guy who was trying to stab that Russian guy.”

Garlic bread is code……….comrade.
so what’s the storybehind the bizarre concept of pasta in a bread cup? Or the various pizza edgings?
Thin and crispy, pan or deep dish? you have to ask? Is there a body at the bottom of the garden? I’ve already said too much….
“I’ve always wondered why pizza is about the only style of takeout in Australia that you can expect to be home-delivered.”
I have never wondered this before. But now I will not sleep until I have an answer.
in Hong Kong – anything you can ordered in a restaurant can be home delivered. some things as i mentioned in the original post should never be ordered as home-delivered… even if you can. Steak is one of them.
I think the pizza became the number one popular home delivered food stuff around the time that Pizza Hut ceased to offer a restaurant experience and threw in it’s considerable ‘lot’ with competitors like Dominos and before that ‘Silvios’.
Remember that BrisVegas institution? Yellow and red boxes before they got bought up by the box with the dots.
Pizza is perfect for home delivery.
It ‘travels’ relatively well, can be re-heated a number of times and still maintain a reasonable degree of presentation and taste, and more than anything – it has been highly commoditized.
That’s to say they are now super-dirt cheap as they crank those pies out at volume and cheaper still to distribute with small hole in the wall cook-shops and a fleet of non-company owned delivery cars manned by cheap teenage students working for hourly.
The interesting thing to me is that in Australia – they are now looking at doing away with the ‘premium’ service of home delivery and offering super cheap rates if you comer out and pick them up yourself.
I mean $4.00 for a pie picked up? You couldn’t possibly make one for that and when compared to other fast foods and home delivery staples where they are $20-80… $4.00 is a barrrrrgain.
That’s what I reckon anyway.
oh and they are a front for ASIO training.
