A friend of the Logic shared a link with me the other day, that might be of interest to other Australian Voodoonista as well. It’s an online bookstore, much like Amazon.com, that specialises in delivery to Australia and New Zealand. It’s called fishpond.com.au, and while I don’t think it’s as diverse or extensive as Amazon, it’s nice not to have to pay international shipping rates from the US for the items it does have in stock.

Here are some price comparisons for you:

I just bought How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman at Borders – I paid $63.99 – it’s $36.98 at Fishpond (sob!) and I paid $43.99 for Lonely Planet Turkey which is $40.95 at Fishpond. However, according to the front covers, I have more recent editions.

thanks Muz, I love book shopping.

    Hi Sandie,

Ah, that’s a shame that you missed out on a better price on the Mark Bittman book!

Just out of curiosity, I also did a comparison on these two books against Amazon.com prices, and I was surprised to discover that Amazon came out about $7 cheaper, even taking into account the charges for shipping from the US and the free shipping from fishpond!

I suspect there’s probably a ‘sweet spot’ in there somewhere, where fishpond’s free shipping for orders over $50 will start being much cheaper than Amazon’s reduced prices, if you are buying more than a certain number of items at once.

On another topic, from looking at these two book purchases, I’ve deduced that you intend to open a restaurant in Turkey. Or — and this is obviously a very remote possibility — I could be wrong about that. :-)

well I ordered the special pack of the Sookie Stackhouse novels (the books that inspired the southern Vampire series of note) and price wise….well it was slightly better than Amazon but only marginally so but I was a tad disappointed that the turn around time between ordering and receiving them was about the same…. I kinda expected it to be much much quicker…. but not. not sure if I’d use them again…. mall chains like QBD are cheaper and Amazon has still got everyone beat in terms of selection and processes.
