How do you tell good Heavy Metal music from bad Heavy Metal music? Also, is there any such thing as good Heavy Metal music? Just wondering out loud.

It’s fairly easy to tell good Heavy Metal music from bad…I listen to GOOD Heavy Metal music…the stuff I don’t listen to is bad. Solved.

Ahh Stark Raving you fell into the old trap.

Bad Metal is played by those who scream and wear spandex. Good Metal is played by those who scream and wear spandex. Wha? Oh crap.

Yes, well I’m not sure I’d like to rely on a definition of Good Heavy Metal music that will require me to break into your house at 3 in the morning to go through your CD collection to find out if a particular Heavy Metal song makes the Stark Raving Duncan Grade Of Heavy Metal Goodness.

Perhaps you could provide some examples of ‘good’ Heavy Metal music… if you can.

I’ve always wanted to know the difference between Speed Matel, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, and Black Metal. Does it have something to do with the volume? Image? Vocal range of the lead singer? Screaming guitars? or Spandex?

    This cracked me up:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_subgenres

I was looking for the Poseur Metal, Spandex Metal, Long Hair Metal, Sandpaper Vocals Metal, and Vegetarian Metal sub-genres, but it appears there wasn’t much info on those at this time.

Good metalic music is like good acid. The right stuff in the right amplitude can clear your head. Bad metal is like bad acid…it can make you feel fupped duck, a little too rattled, a tad testy. At least that’s how i measure it.

personally I hate any sort of ‘metal’ music except maybe in it’s infancy… you know… Led Zepplin and the like… other than that outfits like Metallica kinda suck… and yet I like ACDC…. but is ACDC metal or heavy or more kinda stadium rock…. oh and KISS was not so bad in small doses… you know… like herpes.

    ….I do like Warrant’s “Cherry Pie”… but maybe that’s more of a videoclip like…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMsrainCJsM

Creature, you probably thought about the same scene from Bad News Tour, in which Vim is trying to argue that Bad News is “bigger than Heavy Metal” and Den isn’t going anywhere until people assure him that the band isn’t New Romantic.

I guess every band attempts to distinguish itself from every other band in a genre, which is why you end up with almost as many sub-genres as you have bands.

I love the fact that there’s a sub-genre called Folk Metal — I’m trying to imagine Cradle Of Filth, for example, singing Simon And Garfunkel tunes.

Okay, I need to stop doing that now…
